Green Spain I

7-Night Itinerary

From Cantabria to Galicia this route runs westwards across northern Spain – a leisurely and uncrowded combination of fishing villages, walled cities, glorious mountain scenery, and much more.

Suggested access airports: Bilbao/Santander/ Santiago de Compostela

Parador de Limpias - Night 1, 2 & 3

The town is home to the parish church of San Pedro. In the surrounding area there are a number of interesting towns, including Laredo, Castrourdiales and Santoña. Another option is to make the town’s natural surroundings the focal point of your trip, with visits to the Cabarceno Nature Reserve or Ansón Valley. Santander and Bilbao, with the Guggenheim Museum, are other attractions to discover.

Parador de Cangas de Onis - Night 4

This region is quintessential Asturias. In the town of Cangas de Onis we recommend visiting the Roman Bridge, Santa Cruz Chapel and Cortés Palace. Near Picos de Europa National Park you can visit Casa Dago (visitors’ centre for the Picos de Europa National Park). The Royal Residence of Covadonga is another of the area’s highlights, along with the nearby Covadonga Lakes (Enol and Ercina), and the route of the Cares River.

Parador de Gijon - Night 5

Gijón: historic, commercial, and industrial, where the sea, the gentle mountains and the city come together to create one of the most attractive metropolitan areas in northern Spain. San Lorenzo Beach, the esplanade, the marina, the Semana Negra (Black Week) festival, an active social scene and festive atmosphere all invite visitors to discover the city. Gijón has a network of museums and a variety of cultural events, including an international film festival and Latin American Book Show. Some of the town’s museums are noteworthy for their uniqueness, among them the Railroad Museum (Museo del Ferrocarril), the International Bagpipe Museum, the birthplace of Jovellanos, the Nicanor Piñole Museum, and the Revillagigedo Palace, among
others.

Parador de Ribadeo - Night 6

This Galician seaside town lies on the border between Galicia and Asturias. As we near the end of our route, it offers a much needed rest, and the opportunity to discover some beautiful places, including various beaches, especially Catedrales Beach and those along the Ribadeo Ria. We also recommend San Damián Fort, Do Santos Bridge and the nearby town of Castropol.

Parador de Vilalba - Night 7

Near Vilalba, highlights include the natural areas along the Magdalena and Ladra rivers and the Alligal Medicinal Pool (Charca Medicinal), with its thermal waters. We also recommend visiting the Museum of Prehistory and Archeology, Cospeito (10 km.), Lagunas de Valverde (10 km.), and Mondoñedo (25 km.), as well as the cathedral and Diocesan Museum.
