The town of Sto. Domingo is an excellent starting point for discovering the Upper Rioja region and its wealth of heritage linked to wine and viniculture, famous throughout the world. We recommend a visit to the Ontañón Winery/ Museum (Logroño), the Haro Enology Station in Haro, the Vivanco Museum of the Culture of Wine in Briones, as well as some of the vineyards in the Upper Rioja region, which are open to visitors. Another possibility is following the Wine Architecture Route (Gehry, Calatrava, Moneo, etc.). In Santo Domingo you can explore the Exenta Tower, or stand-alone cathedral itself (with its impressive high altar, saint’s mausoleum, hen’s cage and cloister). Nearby lies the town of San Millán de la Cogolla, where you can visit the San Millán de Yuso Monastery and San Millán de Suso Monastery.
Situated 120 km from Zaragoza, the town is steeped in history and appears to be untouched since its founding. In reality, the town has been restored to retain all of the charm and beauty it first had, with tall buildings and lanes just waiting to be explored. A walk around the town is well worth the trip to explore the medieval charms Sos del Rey has to offer such as the Jaca Gate, the noble Bonafonte House, the 16th century Renaissance Town Hall and Sos del Rey’s medieval market. Other points of interest include the Monastery of Nuestra Señora and the ruins of the medieval castle Sada Palace, where Ferdinand II of Aragon was born.
In the region of Bajo Aragón, the knights of the “Orden de Calatrava” resided during several centuries in its castle, which is located on a hill dominating the village, and in which the Parador of Alcañiz is located today. In Alcañiz, the visitor should see the “Torre Del Homenaje” (XII century) with its Gothic wall paintings of the XIV century, the medieval secret passes, and the monumental Plaza de España, formed by the City Hall (XVI century), the Gothic “Lonja” (XIV century), and the church of Sta María la Mayor (XVIII century). Alcañiz is a good starting point for visiting the region “Comarca del Matarranya” with its medieval villages of Valderrobres and Calaceite and the Natural Park of “El Parrisal” in Beceite, as well as the nearby region of the “Maestrazgo” with its mountains and beautiful small villages
