Winter Escape to Malaga

Looking for a quick break to fit in some sunshine this winter?  The city of Málaga is the perfect destination with average winter temperatures of 18°C, a well-served airport, and plenty to see and do. Whilst amongst many Brits Málaga is known primarily for its international airport, often used for those visiting the Costa del Sol or hopping on a Mediterranean cruise, but ask any Spaniard and they will tell you there is much more to this vibrant city than meets the eye.

The Port of Málaga is Spain’s oldest continuously-operating port, functioning as an international seaport and a key stopping point for many cruises as well as being a major fishing port. In recent years the area around the port has undergone extensive renovation and the wonderful is now a popular walkway with locals and tourists alike. With this new promenade, the and the shopping district, it can be easy to overlook the fact the Málaga is brimming with historical treasures.

In addition to these ancient wonders, you cannot fail to miss the Gibralfaro Castle, home to the Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro, it dominates the city’s skyline, overlooking the port and the historic . A visit to Málaga’s Archaeological Museum takes you on a journey through Málaga’s rich history.

In addition to its historical offerings, Málaga has contributed greatly to world or arts and culture. Famous as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city has a wonderful museum dedicated to the artist which is situated in the Buenavista Palace and boasts a collection of over 280 works. Málaga is also the hometown of painter Felix Revello de Toro and actor Antonio Banderas.

Car lovers and fashionistas can combine their interests at the fascinating Museo Automovilistico Car Museum which houses the collection of Portuguese car fanatic João Magalhães. With almost 100 vintage cars dating back as far as the 19th century and over 200 fashion pieces from some of Europe’s greatest fashion houses (including the likes of Dior, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel) the museum makes for a truly glamorous experience.

The city is also famous amongst Spaniards for the wonderful Málaga Féria which takes place each August and is one of the country’s largest fiestas. The week-long celebration sees Málaga’s streets full of fairgrounds, flamenco shows, food stalls, fireworks, ‘fino’ sherry tastings and, of course, excellent musical performances. As the Costa del Sol’s capital, Málaga is a key cosmopolitan centre with excellent shopping streets, an endless number of restaurants, cafes, bars and plenty of opportunities to try delicious tapas.

There are two wonderful Paradors to choose from as well as a number of good quality city centre hotels.

This Parador forms part of the imposing Gibralfaro Castle and shares those magnificent panoramic views across the port and city below. Guests here can enjoy a leisurely walk into the city, passing by the Alcazaba Fortress en route.

The newer of the properties, this Parador enjoys close proximity to the city’s airport and a beachside location, as well as easy access to public transport into the city centre. Guests can also enjoy the historic 18-hole golf course (dating back to 1925), 9-hole links course and 9-hole pitch & putt.
