GALICIA: HISTORY AND COAST

28TH SEPTEMBER - 5TH OCTOBER 2022: STAYING IN PARADORS AT SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, MUXIA & BAIONA

This is a combination of historic Paradores and the newest Parador de Costa Morte at Muxia, wild Atlantic coastline, interesting excursions, a chance to enjoy the local seafood and taste the Albariño wines and ending in the  magnificent Parador beside the Cathedral, in the heart of Santiago de Compostela. In fact everything you could wish for in a week’s holiday in one of Spain’s most beautiful regions.

This has always been our most expensive holiday staying in top of the range Paradores and unfortunately prices have risen this year, nevertheless as with all our holidays, this will prove to be very good value for money as so much is included.

Airlines have a habit of changing times of flights but these are the times listed for the dates below.

WEDNESDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER: Fly to Santiago and drive south through the rural countryside dotted with vineyards, and across the Rias Baixas (wide estuaries that divide the region into a series of headlands). West of the city of Vigo we arrive at BAIONA for a 3-night stay in the former fortress converted into a Parador.  After settling in there will be a welcome drink and dinner in the Parador.

THURSDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER: This will be a day to explore the town, maybe walk round the wall of the fortress with sea views in all directions, swim in the pool, or on one of the little beaches below the Parador,  visit “La Pinta”,  a replica of one of the 3 ships of Columbus’s first voyage, or simply relax in this lovely place.  The evening will be free to give a chance to sample the local restaurants, or have dinner, or a bar snack in the Parador.  A boat trip to Las Islas Cies (the National Park of the Atlantic islands) can be arranged from either Baiona or Vigo (weather permitting). Dinner is not included.

FRIDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER: There will be an excursion to Playa de America for a walk, swim or to relax on the beach, followed by a stop in Tui for a lunch break and a visit to the Celtic village and hermitage at Santa Tecla. Dinner will be in “A Pinta” restaurant in the grounds of the Parador, with views across the bay to Las Islas Cies.

SATURDAY 1ST OCTOBER: Morning in Baiona before the coastal drive to MUXIA with time for lunch or wine-tasting at  Cambados, the capital of the Albariño wine district, and another short stop at the pretty harbour at Muros before continuing to Muxia. Dinner in the Parador.

SUNDAY 2ND OCTOBER: This will be a day in and around the Parador to explore the local surroundings, absorb the sea air and enjoy the infinity pool and spa in the Parador,  with a short tour of the places of interest in the area. This will include time in the village of Muxia and a visit to Punta de la Barca, the final point of the Camino de Santiago for those who continue from the city to the coast, where “The Sanctuary de nos Senora de Barco” stands beside the lighthouse.  For the energetic it will be possible to walk back to the Parador from this point. Dinner in the Parador.

MONDAY 3RD OCTOBER:  After a stop in La Coruña with time for lunch we shall continue to  SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, stopping at Monte do Gozo, where pilgrims catch their first glimpse of the spires of the Cathedral. We then continue to the Parador in the centre of the city.  As the Parador is surrounded by restaurants the evening will be free to go out or have dinner or a bar snack in the Parador. Dinner is not included.

TUESDAY 4TH OCTOBER: There will be a guided tour in the morning and then the day will be free but transport will be arranged for those who would like to have a walk on the Camino.  Farewell drink and a celebration dinner in the Parador.
